The Religious Education program provides for the education in the faith for our young people. Its aim is to educate them in Church doctrine, help prepare them for the Sacraments, and a life of faith and service. Weekly Mass attendance is most important. Our Religious Education program supports the parents in their child's faith formation. Families that choose to do so, may opt to teach their child at home, attend Mass regularly. At the end of the school year, completed workbooks are collected, corrected, and returned to the family.
GRADE 1- Textbook work is done at home w/parent(s) and we meet with the children for Activity Days (2/yr). All students must complete the book before registering for Grade 2.
GRADE 2- First Penance and First Communion Preparation-The students, after completing their First Penance book receives First Penance in early December. We have classes on Sunday mornings (not every week) at St. Ann Church in West Newbury. Some chapter work is completed at home, and we do half the chapters in class. Parents attend classes with their child.
After the Christmas vacation, we begin preparing for First Communion and the children receive this book at the first class. Same procedure as above. First Communion is celebrated just after Easter. We have one celebration at St. Ann Church, Sunday, April 30 at Noon.
GRADES 3-6- Students attend classes following the 8 AM Mass in Merrimac (Nativity Church) Sunday mornings. Classes end at 10 AM. All of our teachers/catechists must do a CORI, (criminal background check) and attend one VIRTUS training session (Protecting God's Children) in order to teach. We have ACTIVITY DAYS at each grade level throughout the year, usually on a Saturday so we can join the parents, and attend Mass together.
GRADES 7 and 8- Students attend classes at Nativity Church hall on alternating Tuesday evenings 6-7:30 PM. The Middle School and High School-aged students are the TEAM LEADERS for the above Activity Days. Parents are always welcome to participate as well.
GRADES 9 and 10- Confirmation Preparation Our students seeking this sacrament attend this two year program. (Students that attend a Catholic high school are excused from attending 9th grade sessions) All of these sessions are lectures, usually with guest speakers from throughout the Archdiocese. Our tenth graders are to attend all sessions with an adult, preferably their Sponsor for Confirmation, if possible. All students are asked to complete service hours at home, at church, and for their communities/schools as part of their preparation for Confirmation. Students attend a RETREAT DAY in the fall, attend a REHEARSAL with their Sponsor, and receive Confirmation in the fall of their junior year of high school.
YOUTH MASSES are held monthly during the school year for all of our Rel. Ed. families. In collaboration with Immaculate Conception Parish in Newburyport, the location of the Mass alternates with Holy Redeemer Parish at Merrimac. Masses are held on Sunday evenings.
